FAO’s “Four Betters” Framework

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has identified the “Four Betters” as a guiding principle for its work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 1 – No Poverty
  • SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

The framework also supports the broader 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing integrated progress across multiple goals.

🔹 The Four Betters

  1. Better Production – Enhancing agricultural productivity and efficiency through sustainable practices.
  2. Better Nutrition – Ensuring access to diverse, safe, and nutritious diets for all.
  3. Better Environment – Promoting sustainable use of natural resources and minimizing ecological impacts.
  4. Better Life (Leaving No One Behind) – Improving livelihoods, equity, and social inclusion across agrifood systems.

🔹 Key Principles

  • The Four Betters are interconnected, reflecting the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of agrifood systems.
  • They do not represent separate pathways to the 2030 Agenda, but rather mutually reinforcing approaches to achieve SDGs.
  • Progress in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and sustainable agrifood systems is expected to accelerate achievement of most other SDGs and targets.
