India and Bhutan signed an Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of cross-border railway links, marking a historic step in enhancing bilateral connectivity and cooperation.

The MoU envisages the creation of the first set of railway connections between the two countries:

  • Kokrajhar (Assam, India) – Gelephu (Bhutan)
  • Banarhat (West Bengal, India) – Samtse (Bhutan)

These projects are expected to boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties, while also strengthening the strategic partnership.


Milestone in Energy Cooperation

Both sides also welcomed the successful commissioning of all six units of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, a landmark in the India-Bhutan Joint Vision on Energy Partnership. The project is set to further deepen collaboration in clean energy and contribute to Bhutan’s economic development while supporting India’s renewable energy needs.
