Forest Fire Engulfs Valley of Flowers

A forest fire has been raging for the last five days in the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prompting the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Department to seek assistance from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to control the blaze.

Location and Extent of the Fire

  • The fire broke out in the forests of Painkhanda under the Valley of Flowers range of the Nanda Devi National Park.
  • The affected area lies in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, at an altitude of about 3,300 metres above sea level.

Challenges in Firefighting

  • Difficult terrain, high altitude, and lack of access routes have made it extremely challenging for ground firefighting teams to reach the site.
  • These constraints led the state authorities to request aerial support from the IAF for fire suppression.

About the Valley of Flowers National Park

  • The Valley of Flowers is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting around 600 species of exotic alpine flowers.
  • It is internationally recognised for its exceptional natural beauty and ecological significance.

UNESCO World Heritage Significance

  • The Valley of Flowers National Park, together with the Nanda Devi National Park, forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The two parks together represent a unique transition zone between the Zanskar mountain range and the Great Himalaya.

Ecological and Cultural Importance

  • The gentle alpine meadows of the Valley of Flowers contrast with the rugged mountain wilderness of Nanda Devi, creating a rare ecological landscape.
  • The region has been admired by botanists and mountaineers for over a century.
  • It also holds deep significance in Hindu mythology, making it both an ecological and cultural treasure.
