G20 Critical Minerals Framework

The 2025 G20 Summit declaration announced the establishment of the G20 Critical Minerals Framework, designed to use critical minerals as a driver of sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, and resilience.

  • Focus on Global South benefits: The framework aims to ensure that mineral-producing countries, especially in the Global South, gain maximum value from their resources by moving beyond the traditional model of exporting raw minerals.
  • Rising global demand: The declaration highlighted that global economic shifts—such as green transitions, rapid digitisation, and industrial innovation—are significantly increasing the demand for critical minerals.
  • Voluntary, non-binding blueprint: The framework serves as a voluntary, non-binding guide to build sustainable, transparent, stable, and resilient mineral value chains capable of meeting emerging global challenges.
  • Protecting sovereign rights: It reaffirms the sovereign rights of mineral-rich nations to utilise their natural resources for inclusive growth and national development.
  • Diversification & standards: The framework encourages diversification of sources, routes, markets, processing hubs, and value chains, while upholding strong economic, social, and environmental standards across the sector.
