GI-tagged Joha rice exported to UK & Italy for the first time

Why in the News

  • India exported its first consignment of GI-tagged Joha Rice from Assam to United Kingdom and Italy.
  • The 25-metric-tonne shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the Assam government.

  • The consignment was dispatched on March 12 as part of efforts to promote indigenous agricultural products in global markets.
  • Joha Rice received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017.
  • The rice variety is cultivated across about 21,662 hectares in Assam.
  • Estimated production during FY 2024–25 is around 43,298 metric tonnes.
