Goan feni receives GI-tag

Goan Ozzo Feni, produced by Cazcar Distillery in Nanora village near Panaji, has become the first-ever feni to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in India. This prestigious recognition affirms feni’s authentic origin in Goa, ensuring protection from imitations and enhancing its domestic and international market value. The GI status places feni alongside globally renowned products like Scotch whisky (Scotland) and Champagne (France).

About Feni:

  • Type: Traditional Indian spirit
  • Ingredients: Made from either cashew apples or coconut sap
  • Method: Fermentation followed by double distillation
  • Characteristics: Strong, clear, uniquely flavoured liquor
  • Heritage: Introduced by Portuguese missionaries in the 1600s, along with cashew trees and distillation techniques
  • Craftspeople: Known as bhatikars, traditionally used earthen pots (bhatis) for distillation

This GI tag not only preserves a rich Goan cultural legacy but also boosts feni’s global profile as a heritage craft spirit.
