Govt Approves Renovation of Historic Bascule Bridge at Kolkata Port

The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved the renovation of the historic Bascule Bridge at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port at an estimated cost of ₹117.54 crore. The project aims to improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency at the Kolkata Dock System.

The initiative involves the modernisation of the nearly six-decade-old double-leaf bascule bridge, which is a crucial infrastructure component within the dock system. Originally constructed by Wagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG, the bridge will undergo extensive structural strengthening along with electro-mechanical upgrades to ensure smoother and safer operations.

The renovation work will be carried out by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

A bascule bridge is a type of movable bridge in which the main girders and deck can be lifted upward around a hinge located at the end of the span. This design allows ships and large vessels to pass through waterways while maintaining road connectivity when the bridge is closed.
