HAL Signs $1-Billion Jet Engine Deal with GE Aerospace for Tejas Programme

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a $1-billion (₹8,870 crore) agreement with GE Aerospace (U.S.) to procure 113 jet engines for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A programme.

Deal Details:

  • Engines: F404-GE-IN20 jet engines.
  • Delivery Schedule: Begins in 2027 and will be completed by 2032.
  • The deal includes engines and a support package to execute the 97 LCA Mk-1A aircraft order.
  • The agreement marks a significant milestone in India’s defence manufacturing collaboration with the United States.

Background:

  • The signing comes despite trade tensions following the U.S. administration’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods.
  • In September 2025, India’s Defence Ministry finalized a ₹62,370-crore deal with HAL to procure 97 Tejas Mk-1A aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • Earlier, in February 2021, the Ministry had signed a ₹48,000-crore contract with HAL for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets.
