The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A, manufactured at the third production line of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), successfully completed its maiden flight in Nashik.

Defence Minister Inaugurates New Production Lines

  • The Defence Minister inaugurated:
    • The third production line for the LCA Mk1A, and
    • The second production line for the Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) aircraft.
  • Both facilities are located at HAL’s Nashik Division.

About the New Production Line

  • The Nashik LCA production line has an annual capacity of eight aircraft.
  • With this addition, HAL’s total LCA Mk1A production capacity rises to 24 aircraft per year.
  • The move is aimed at fast-tracking delivery of LCA Tejas aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Existing Facilities

  • The first two LCA production lines and the first HTT-40 line are situated in Bengaluru.
  • The expansion to Nashik marks a major step in decentralizing aircraft production and enhancing output efficiency.

About the Aircraft

  • LCA Tejas Mk1A:
    • An indigenously designed and developed multi-role light combat aircraft.
    • Features upgraded avionics, advanced radar, and improved maintainability.
    • Plays a key role in India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.
  • HTT-40:
    • An indigenous Basic Trainer Aircraft developed by HAL for the IAF’s pilot training.
    • Designed for reliability, low operating costs, and high training efficiency.

Strategic Significance

  • The new production lines reflect India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
  • The move is expected to strengthen the IAF’s fleet and reduce dependence on foreign platforms.
