Haryana Records Sharp Improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth

Haryana has registered a significant improvement in its Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB), which rose to 923 in 2025, marking a 13-point increase from 910 in 2024. This is the highest SRB recorded by the state in the last five years, according to official data.

Crackdown on Sex-Selective Practices Pays Off
State officials have attributed the improvement to strict measures against prenatal sex determination and illegal abortions. Key interventions include intensified action against sex-selective abortions and the illegal sale of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits, along with closer monitoring of clinics and diagnostic centres.

Five-Year Trend Shows Recovery
Data indicates that Haryana’s SRB has shown gradual recovery after fluctuations in recent years. The SRB stood at 923 in 2019, dipped slightly to 922 in 2020, and fell further to 914 in 2021. It then improved to 917 in 2022, marginally declined to 916 in 2023, before making a strong rebound in 2025.

Long-Term Gains Since 2014
Haryana has made notable progress over the past decade. The state’s sex ratio improved from 871 in 2014 to 876 in 2015, followed by a record 24-point jump to 900 in 2016. It rose further to 914 in 2017, remained unchanged in 2018, and has since shown an overall upward trajectory despite intermittent setbacks.

Officials Credit Sustained Policy Focus
Authorities emphasised that sustained enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, awareness campaigns, and community engagement have collectively contributed to changing social attitudes and improving gender balance at birth.
