Hunger Hotspots

A new joint UN report, “Hunger Hotspots,” warns of extreme hunger, starvation, and potential death in five global hunger hotspots. Urgent humanitarian action and a coordinated international effort are crucial to address these crises. The report was released by UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP)

Key points from the report:

  • Five Hotspots of Highest Concern: The report identifies Sudan, Palestine, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali as the top priority areas.
  • Current and Impending Crises: Communities in these hotspots are already facing famine, are at risk of famine, or are experiencing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity.
  • Driving Factors: The crises are primarily driven by intensifying or persisting conflict, economic shocks, and natural hazards.
  • Exacerbating Factors: Growing access constraints for aid and critical funding shortfalls are worsening the devastating situations.
  • Report’s Purpose: The semi-annual Hunger Hotspots report provides early-warning and predictive analysis of deteriorating food crises for the next five months.
  • Funding and Collaboration: The report is developed and published with financial support from the European Union through the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC).
  • Widespread Deterioration: The latest edition projects a serious deterioration of acute food insecurity in 13 countries and territories in the coming months, highlighting them as the world’s most critical hunger hotspots.

This report serves as a critical alert for the international community to mobilize resources and intervene swiftly to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
