Ibu Baron-Longest measured snake in the world

A giant female reticulated python discovered deep in the forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, has been officially recognised as the longest measured snake in the world, the Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed.

The snake, a Malayopython reticulatus, measures an extraordinary 7.22 metres (23 feet 8 inches) in length. Named Ibu Baron, meaning “The Baroness”, the python was found late last year and has now set a new global record.

According to Guinness World Records, the massive snake would span the entire width of a standard FIFA football goalpost. To put its size into everyday perspective, its length is roughly equivalent to six-and-a-half shopping carts lined up end to end.

The record measurement was conducted by Diaz Nugraha, a wildlife guide, rescuer, and licensed snake handler from Kalimantan, Borneo, along with Radu Frentiu, an explorer and natural-history photographer who has been residing in Bali for over two decades.

Reticulated pythons are already known as the longest snake species in the world, but the confirmation of Ibu Baron’s length marks a new benchmark and highlights the rich and still largely unexplored biodiversity of Indonesia’s forest ecosystems.
