ICC Confirms War Crimes Charges Against Uganda’s Fugitive Warlord Joseph Kony

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against Joseph Kony, the fugitive leader of Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The confirmation was made in absentia, marking a rare move by the ICC against a suspect still at large.

Charges and Crimes

  • Kony faces 39 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including:
    • Murder and attempted murder
    • Rape and sexual slavery
    • Using child soldiers
    • Forced pregnancy
    • Enslavement and inhumane acts
  • These crimes were committed between 2002 and 2005, primarily in northern Uganda.

Background

  • An arrest warrant for Joseph Kony was issued by the ICC in 2005, making him the Court’s longest-standing fugitive.
  • Kony founded the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in the late 1980s, initially claiming to overthrow the Ugandan government.

The LRA Insurgency

  • Under Kony’s leadership, the LRA waged a brutal insurgency for nearly two decades, using abduction, torture, and forced conscription as tools of warfare.
  • According to United Nations estimates, the conflict killed around 100,000 people and displaced millions across Uganda and neighbouring countries.

Current Status

  • The LRA has been largely dismantled, and most of its senior commanders have been killed, captured, or surrendered.
  • However, Joseph Kony remains at large, continuing to evade arrest for nearly two decades since the ICC’s first warrant in 2005.
