IIT Madras Launches ‘Language and Cognition Laboratory’ to Study India’s Linguistic Diversity

First-of-its-kind Lab in India

• IIT Madras has inaugurated the ‘Language and Cognition Laboratory’ (LC-Lab) at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
• It is the first lab in India dedicated to systematically studying the country’s linguistic diversity through experimental linguistics.

Focus on Language Processing and Human Cognition

• The LC-Lab will explore how humans perceive, process, and produce language.
• Research will involve advanced experimental methods, integrating cognitive science, linguistics, psychology, and technology.

Towards Human-Centric, Linguistically Aware AI

• A long-term goal of the lab is to support the development of human-centred and linguistically inclusive AI systems.
• The initiative aims to ensure that India’s diverse languages and cultural contexts are appropriately represented in emerging technologies.

Collaboration with Centre for Responsible AI

• The LC-Lab will work closely with the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI), IIT Madras.
• The collaboration will focus on applying AI techniques to language and cognition research, promoting responsible and inclusive AI innovation.
