India and Mongolia Reaffirm Strategic Partnership, Announce New Cooperation Initiatives

India and Mongolia reaffirmed their strategic partnership during the visit of Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh to India.

  • Occasion: Marks 70 years of diplomatic relations and 10 years of strategic partnership between the two nations.

Commemorative Gesture:

  • Both leaders jointly released a postal stamp symbolising the shared civilisational and cultural ties between India and Mongolia.

Defence Cooperation:

  • India announced a new capacity-building programme for Mongolia’s border security forces.
  • Appointment of a Defence Attaché in the Indian Embassy in Ulaanbaatar.

Cultural & Religious Cooperation:

  • India to send the holy relics of Lord Buddha’s disciples, Sariputra and Maudgalyayana, to Mongolia in 2026.
  • A Sanskrit teacher will be sent to the Gandan Monastery to promote studies in Buddhist philosophy.

Economic & Infrastructure Cooperation:

  • Review of progress on the Oil Refinery Project in Mongolia, India’s largest overseas development partnership, supported by a $1.7 billion line of credit.

Strategic Importance:

  • The visit underscores deepening ties in defence, energy, digital infrastructure, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, reflecting the longstanding friendship and shared spiritual heritage between the two countries.
