India Backs UNGA Resolution on Palestine, Endorses Two-State Solution

On 12 September 2025, India voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution endorsing the New York Declaration on peacefully resolving the Palestine issue through a two-state solution. The resolution, introduced by France, received overwhelming support with 142 nations in favour, 10 against, and 12 abstentions.

Nations Opposing the Resolution

Countries voting against the resolution included Israel, the United States, Argentina, and Hungary.

Call for Urgent Action

The declaration was first circulated during a high-level UN conference in July, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. It called for urgent steps to end the Gaza conflict and secure a lasting peace.

Key Commitments in the Declaration

The New York Declaration urged world leaders to take collective action for a just settlement of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, including:

  • A clear Israeli commitment to a sovereign and viable Palestinian state
  • An immediate halt to violence, settlement expansion, land grabs, and annexation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem
  • An end to settlers’ violence and rejection of annexation policies
  • Support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination
