India Hosts First-Ever 3GPP RAN Meetings on 6G Standardization

Why in News?

For the first time ever, India is hosting the 3GPP Radio Access Networks (RAN1–RAN5) Working Group meetings in Whitefield, Bengaluru (25–29 August 2025).

Key Highlights

About the Event

  • Organized with support from DoT, Ministry of Communications.
  • Hosted by Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI).
  • Marks the first time global 3GPP discussions are held in India.

Focus of the Meetings

  • 3GPP Release 19 → finalization of specifications to advance 5G Advanced.
  • 3GPP Release 20 → beginning discussions on 6G standardization.

About 3GPP

  • 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) → global body for developing mobile communication standards (2G to 6G).
  • RAN Working Groups (RAN1–RAN5): deal with various aspects of radio technologies.
  • 3GPP specifications form the foundation of global mobile networks.

Role of TSDSI

  • TSDSI = India’s recognized Standards Development Organization (SDO).
  • One of the seven organizational partners of 3GPP.
  • Facilitates India’s participation in global telecom standardization.
