India Inducts First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) inducted its first Pollution Control Vessel, Samudra Pratap, at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on 23 December 2025. The vessel was formally delivered during an induction ceremony, marking a major milestone in India’s maritime environmental protection capabilities.

First-of-its-Kind for Indian Coast Guard
Samudra Pratap is the first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel in the ICG fleet. Its induction significantly strengthens India’s preparedness to respond to marine pollution incidents, including oil spills, chemical leaks and maritime fire emergencies.

Advanced Combat and Support Systems
The vessel is equipped with modern weaponry and systems, including:

  • 30 mm CRN-91 gun
  • Two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled guns with integrated fire control systems
  • High-capacity external firefighting system
  • Pollution Response Boat with davit
  • Sea boat davit and shaft generator

Cutting-Edge Pollution Control Features
Samudra Pratap is the first ICG vessel to feature:

  • Retractable stern thruster
  • Dynamic Positioning System (DPS)
  • Flush-type side sweeping arms

It is also fitted with major pollution control equipment, enabling rapid and effective response during maritime pollution emergencies.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat
With over 60% indigenous content, the vessel aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The induction underscores India’s growing capability in indigenous shipbuilding and marine environmental protection.
