India Re-elected to the IMO Council for 2026–27 with Highest Vote Tally

India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–27 biennium, securing the highest number of votes (154 out of 169) in Category B, which represents nations with the largest interest in international seaborne trade. This marks the second consecutive biennium in which India has topped its category.

• Election Held During 34th IMO Assembly: The elections took place on 28 November during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly in London. Category B includes 10 major maritime trading nations, highlighting India’s strong standing within the global shipping sector.

• Role and Significance of the IMO Council: The IMO Council—an executive body of the 175-member UN specialised agency—consists of 40 member states across three categories:

  • Category A: Nations with the largest interest in providing international shipping services
  • Category B: Nations with the largest interest in international seaborne trade
  • Category C: Nations with special interests in maritime navigation or expertise

• Boost to India’s Maritime Influence: India’s re-election reflects international recognition of its:

  • Expanding maritime capabilities
  • Rising shipbuilding capacity
  • Modernisation of ports
  • Commitment to green and sustainable shipping

• Alignment with Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047: The renewed mandate reinforces India’s commitment to its long-term strategy under the Amrit Kaal Maritime Vision 2047, aimed at transforming the nation into a global maritime leader.

• Strengthening India’s Role in Global Shipping Governance: With this re-election, India continues to solidify its position as an influential voice shaping the future of global maritime policy and trade.
