India Sends 1,000 Metric Tons of Rice to Malawi Amid El Niño-Induced Food Crisis

India has dispatched 1,000 metric tons of rice to the south-east African country Malawi to support the nation grappling with a severe drought triggered by the El Niño weather phenomenon. The humanitarian assistance was announced by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

  • According to the statement, the aid reflects India’s continued commitment to assisting partners in the Global South and strengthening the principles of South–South Cooperation.
  • Malawi is currently facing a major food security crisis, with over 4 million people—nearly 20% of the population—experiencing acute food shortages. The drought has led to rising malnutrition levels, forcing many households to skip meals.
  • The crisis has been worsened by erratic rainfall patterns caused by El Niño, which have severely affected agriculture and water resources. One of the most visible impacts is the drying up of key water bodies, including Lake Chilwa, an important source of livelihood for local communities.
