India Slips to 85th Rank in 2025 Henley Passport Index

India has fallen to the 85th position in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, offering visa-free access to 57 countries. In 2024, India’s passport was ranked 80th, allowing travel to 62 destinations without a visa. The decline reflects a reduction in mobility freedom for Indian passport holders compared to previous years.

Top-Ranked Passports

  • 1st – Singapore: Visa-free access to 193 countries (retains top spot).
  • 2nd – South Korea: Access to 190 countries.
  • 3rd – Japan: Visa-free travel to 189 countries.
  • 4th – Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, and Switzerland: Access to 188 countries.
  • 5th – Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, and the Netherlands: Visa-free access to 187 countries.

United States Falls Out of Top 10

  • The United States ranks 12th this year, sharing the spot with Malaysia, each offering visa-free access to 180 countries.
  • This marks the first time the U.S. has fallen out of the top 10 since the index began.

Lowest-Ranked Passports

  • Afghanistan: Ranked lowest, with visa-free access to 24 countries.
  • Syria: 26 destinations.
  • Iraq: 29 destinations.
  • These nations continue to face severe travel restrictions due to ongoing geopolitical instability.

About the Henley Passport Index

  • The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of countries based on the mobility freedom their ordinary passports provide.
  • It was launched in 2005 as the Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index.
  • In January 2018, it was rebranded as the Henley Passport Index.
  • The index is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and measures the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa.
