India Unveils AI Governance Guidelines under IndiaAI Mission

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) unveiled the India AI Governance Guidelines under the IndiaAI Mission. The framework was formally launched by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.

Purpose and Vision:

  • The guidelines provide a comprehensive governance framework to ensure that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developed and deployed in a safe, inclusive, and responsible manner.
  • The initiative aims to foster cutting-edge innovation while mitigating potential risks to individuals and society.

Key Components:

  • The governance framework comprises four core components and seven guiding principles (Sutras) for ethical and responsible AI.
  • These Sutras lay emphasis on values such as transparency, accountability, safety, inclusivity, fairness, privacy, and sustainability.

Significance:

  • The announcement marks a major milestone in India’s AI governance journey, positioning the country as a leader in responsible AI innovation.
  • It aligns with India’s broader goal of ensuring that AI benefits all sections of society while upholding ethical standards.

Upcoming Global Event:

  • The launch also sets the stage for the India AI Impact Summit 2026, to be held on 19–20 February 2026 in New Delhi, where global experts will deliberate on the future of safe and scalable AI innovation.
