India Uses AI to Bridge Linguistic Diversity

The Indian government is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to bridge the country’s vast linguistic diversity through platforms like Bhashini, BharatGen, and Adi-Vaani.

  • Bhashini – National Language Platform: Launched under the National Language Translation Mission, Bhashini provides real-time translation support for 22 Scheduled Languages and several tribal dialects, promoting linguistic inclusivity in digital spaces.
  • BharatGen – Advanced Translation Models: BharatGen develops AI-driven text-to-text and text-to-speech models, using data from the Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages (SPPEL) and Sanchika, the CIIL’s digital repository.
  • Adi-Vaani – Preserving Tribal Voices: Introduced in 2024, Adi-Vaani is India’s first AI-based platform for real-time translation and preservation of tribal languages such as Santali, Bhili, Mundari, and Gondi.
  • SPPEL Scheme – Safeguarding Endangered Languages: The SPPEL, launched in 2013 and implemented by CIIL Mysuru, documents and digitally archives languages spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
  • TRI-ECE Scheme – Tribal Language Empowerment: The Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ TRI-ECE initiative supports the use of AI-based translation tools to convert English and Hindi content into tribal languages, ensuring cultural sensitivity and linguistic accuracy.
