External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar began his first official visit of 2026 in Europe, travelling to Paris and Luxembourg, amid major shifts in global politics and the international order.

In Paris, Mr. Jaishankar met his French, German and Polish counterparts for the India–Weimar Triangle meeting, marking India’s growing engagement with key European powers.

Why Europe First
The Minister said he chose Europe to kick-start the year as India–Europe ties are deepening, and both sides have the potential to contribute to stability in the global economy and international politics during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.

About the Weimar Triangle

  • The Weimar Triangle was established on 28 August 1991.
  • On that day, the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland met in Weimar, Germany, coinciding with the birthday of German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
  • The initiative aimed to identify shared fundamental interests regarding Europe’s future and promote cross-border cooperation.

Role in European Integration
In a 10-point declaration, the three countries emphasised the major responsibility they shoulder in advancing European integration, underlining their political and strategic significance within Europe.
