Indian Immunologicals Launches India’s First DIVA Marker Vaccine for Cattle

Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) has launched Raksha-IBR, India’s first indigenously developed glycoprotein E (gE) deleted DIVA marker vaccine against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR).

Tackling a Widespread Cattle Disease

IBR, caused by the Bovine Herpes Virus (BHV-1), is endemic in India. It spreads mainly through aerosols and also via infected bull semen. The disease affects the reproductive system of cattle, leading to:

  • Infertility
  • Abortions
  • Reduced milk productivity

Currently, no effective vaccine or specific treatment is available in India for IBR.

What Is a Marker Vaccine?

Marker vaccines, also called DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) vaccines, allow veterinarians to distinguish between naturally infected and vaccinated animals. This helps in better disease surveillance and control strategies.

Industry Impact

With IBR contributing significantly to cattle infertility and productivity losses, the launch of Raksha-IBR is expected to provide a major boost to dairy farmers and the livestock economy.
IIL highlighted that systematic vaccination along with adequate biosecurity measures are critical to preventing the spread of IBR.
