Indian Navy Commissioned Fourth Nilgiri-Class Stealth Frigate ‘Taragiri’

On 28 November, the Indian Navy received Taragiri, the fourth vessel of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) advanced stealth frigates, at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai. This marks a key milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in warship design and construction.

• Legacy and Modern Reincarnation

  • Taragiri (Yard 12653) is the third Project 17A ship built by MDL.
  • The vessel carries forward the legacy of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the Navy for 33 years (1980–2013).

• Cutting-Edge Design and Technology
The new frigate incorporates:

  • Advanced stealth features
  • Improved automation
  • Enhanced survivability
The design reflects a generational leap in naval engineering under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, conceived by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team, Mumbai.

• Integrated Construction and Modern Weaponry
The P17A frigates are built using an integrated construction methodology and are equipped with a modern suite of weapons and sensors, including:

  • BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system
  • MF-STAR radar
  • MRSAM air defence system
  • 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount
  • Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS)

• Strengthening India’s Naval Capabilities
The induction of Taragiri enhances the Indian Navy’s stealth, firepower, and multi-dimensional warfare capabilities, contributing to a stronger maritime defense posture in the region.
