Indian Navy Commissions INS Ikshak into Active Service

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Ikshak on 6 November 2025 at the Naval Base in Kochi.

  • It is the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class, marking another step in enhancing India’s maritime operational and survey capabilities.

Role and Capabilities

  • INS Ikshak is designed to carry out:
    • Hydrographic surveys and oceanographic data collection
    • Coastal defence support
    • Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations
  • The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art survey and navigation systems and a flight deck capable of operating helicopters, enabling rapid deployment for medical and relief missions.

Construction and Design

  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
  • Represents indigenous shipbuilding expertise under the “Make in India” initiative.
  • INS Ikshak is also the first SVL-class vessel designed with dedicated women’s accommodation, highlighting the Navy’s commitment to gender inclusivity.

Operational Significance

  • The ship’s induction will:
    • Strengthen India’s hydrographic survey capabilities
    • Enhance maritime safety and navigation accuracy along key sea routes
    • Support national security and strategic maritime operations
