Indian Navy Receives Third ASW Shallow Water Craft ‘Anjadip’

The Indian Navy on 22 December 2025 inducted Anjadip, the third of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC), strengthening its coastal and shallow-water anti-submarine capabilities.

  • Builder: Designed and built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata
  • Delivery Location: Chennai
  • Execution Model: Public–Private Partnership between GRSE and L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli
  • Classification: Built in accordance with Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) rules

Technical Features

  • Length: ~77 metres
  • Propulsion: Waterjet propulsion, making it the largest Indian naval warship to use waterjets
  • Combat Systems:
    • Advanced lightweight torpedoes
    • Indigenously developed anti-submarine rockets
    • Shallow water sonar systems
  • Role: Detection, tracking and engagement of underwater threats in coastal and shallow waters

Strategic Significance

  • Enhances the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities in littoral zones
  • Supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat through high indigenous content
  • Waterjet propulsion improves manoeuvrability, speed, and operations in shallow waters

Legacy

  • Named after Anjadip Island, off the coast of Karwar, Karnataka
  • Carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Anjadip, a Petya-class corvette decommissioned in 2003
