Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR Initiative

The Indian Navy on 16 March commenced the second edition of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative, marking a significant step in strengthening maritime cooperation across the region.

The latest edition follows India’s recent assumption of the chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium in February 2026 and sees participation from 16 member nations. The initiative is part of India’s broader strategic vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region and aligns with the expanded framework of MAHASAGAR.

IOS SAGAR is designed as a unique operational engagement programme that allows naval personnel from friendly foreign countries to train and sail together aboard Indian naval ships. This collaborative approach aims to enhance interoperability, strengthen professional linkages, and deepen mutual understanding among participating navies.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the initiative will also facilitate the exchange of best practices and promote a shared perspective on regional maritime challenges.

The IOS SAGAR initiative underscores India’s growing role as a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region and reflects its commitment to fostering collective security and cooperation.
