India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system

The Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat is set to become the first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in the country. An agreement has been signed between the Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and ICICI Bank to implement India’s first comprehensive MLFF tolling project.

Nationwide Rollout Planned
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has planned to introduce the MLFF tolling system at 25 National Highway fee plazas across the country, in a phased manner.

How the MLFF System Works
The MLFF is a barrier-less tolling system that allows seamless toll transactions through:

  • FASTag reading via high-performance RFID readers
  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras for Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) tracking

This will enable vehicles to pass without stopping at toll plazas.

Benefits
The system is expected to:

  • Improve toll revenue collection
  • Reduce congestion and travel time
  • Enhance fuel efficiency
  • Lower vehicular emissions
  • Make the National Highway network smarter and more efficient
