Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA)

The United States approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) worth USD 131 million to India.

Purpose: The deal aims to enhance maritime security and domain awareness in the Indo-Pacific region.

  • Includes advanced SeaVision software.
  • Training and support services.
  • Part of efforts to strengthen strategic ties between India and the U.S.

  • Approved by the U.S. State Department.
  • Announced via notification by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

Strategic Context – IPMDA:

  • The deal supports the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) initiative.
  • IPMDA was announced at the Quad Summit (India, Australia, Japan, U.S.) held in Tokyo, May 2022.

Objectives of IPMDA:

  • Track “dark shipping” (vessels operating without active transponders).
  • Build a faster, wider, and more accurate maritime picture of near-real-time activities.
  • Cover three critical regions:
    1. Pacific Islands
    2. Southeast Asia
    3. Indian Ocean Region (IOR)

  • Ensures the safety of sea lines of communication.
  • Promotes regional cooperation among like-minded Indo-Pacific nations.
