INS Sahyadri Joins Multilateral Naval Exercise Malabar-2025 at Guam

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sahyadri, an indigenously designed and built Guided Missile Stealth Frigate, has arrived at Guam in the Northern Pacific to participate in the multilateral naval Exercise Malabar-2025.

  • The exercise underscores India’s commitment to regional security, maritime stability, and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific.

Exercise Malabar-2025

  • Exercise Malabar is a high-end multilateral naval exercise that brings together major maritime democracies to strengthen interoperability, coordination, and mutual trust among participating navies.
  • Originally a bilateral exercise between India and the United States (since 1992), it later expanded to include Japan and Australia, forming a key element of Quad maritime cooperation.

Phases of the Exercise

Harbour Phase (at Guam):

  • Will include:
    • Operational planning and coordination meetings
    • Standardisation of communication protocols
    • Familiarisation visits between participating naval units
    • Sports and cultural interactions to foster camaraderie

Sea Phase:

  • Will focus on complex naval operations, including:
    • Joint fleet manoeuvres and formation sailing
    • Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
    • Surface gunnery drills
    • Advanced flying operations involving shipborne helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft
