INSV Kaundinya

On May 21, 2025, the Indian Navy formally inducted the INSV Kaundinya, an ancient stitched sail ship, during a ceremonial event at the Naval Base in Karwar. This historic vessel symbolizes India’s rich maritime traditions of exploration, trade, and cultural exchange.

    Kaundinya, the legendary Indian mariner who sailed to Southeast Asia across the Indian Ocean.

    Based on a 5th-century ship depicted in murals from the Ajanta Caves.

    • Built under a tripartite agreement signed in July 2023 between:
      • Union Ministry of Culture
      • Indian Navy
      • Hodi Innovations
    • Funded by the Ministry of Culture.
    • Launched in February 2025 at Goa.

  • Traditional Technology:
    • Constructed using ancient stitching methods (no nails or modern fasteners).
    • Equipped with square sails and steering oars, unlike modern naval vessels.
  • Cultural Elements:
    • Sails: Motifs of the Gandabherunda (mythical two-headed bird) and the Sun.
    • Bow: Sculpted Simha Yali (mythical lion figure).
    • Deck: Features a symbolic Harappan-style stone anchor.

Future Plans:

  • A 15-member Indian Navy crew will sail the INSV Kaundinya on a historic voyage to Oman by the end of 2025, retracing ancient maritime trade routes across the Indian Ocean.
