International Abhidhamma Day 2025

The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), in collaboration with Gautam Buddha University (GBU), Greater Noida, and the Union Ministry of Culture, celebrated International Abhidhamma Day on the full moon day of Śharada Pūrṇimā (6–7 October 2025) at Gautam Buddha University.

🔹 About Abhidhamma Day

  • The day commemorates the occasion when Lord Buddha preached the Abhidhamma to the deities of Tavatimsa Heaven, led by his mother Mahamaya.
  • After returning to the human world, Buddha shared this profound teaching with his disciple Arahant Sariputta, who became instrumental in explaining it further.
  • The Abhidhamma Pitaka, forming a key part of the Theravada Buddhist Canon (Tipitaka), presents the analytical and philosophical aspects of the Buddha’s teachings.

🔹 Government Recognition of Pali Language

  • The Government of India has officially declared Pali a Classical Language, acknowledging its immense historical and spiritual significance.
  • Pali serves as the canonical language of Theravada Buddhist texts, including the Abhidhamma Pitaka, which is central to Buddhist philosophy and psychology.
