International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution declaring December 4 as the International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures. The resolution, introduced by Eritrea, passed with 116 votes in favour, 51 against, and 6 abstentions.

Global North countries such as the EU, Australia, UK, Canada, Japan, and the US opposed the resolution.

The resolution:

  • Condemns unilateral economic, financial, or trade measures that violate international law and the UN Charter.
  • States that such actions hamper the development of affected countries, especially developing nations.
  • Aims to raise awareness of the negative impact of these measures.
  • Calls for enhanced international cooperation and solidarity in addressing the consequences.
  • Requests the UN Secretary-General to commemorate and promote the day.
  • Invites UN members, observers, organizations, civil society, and individuals to observe the day and spread awareness.
