International Day of Potato

On May 30, the world celebrated International Day of Potato, recognizing the crop’s versatility, cultural significance, and vital role in global food systems. The 2025 theme, “Shaping History, Feeding the Future,” highlights the potato’s historical roots and its evolving impact on agriculture and food security.

In December 2023, the UN General Assembly designated May 30 as the International Day of Potato to raise awareness of its nutritional, economic, environmental, and cultural importance.

About Potato

Belonging to the Solanaceae family, the potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the third most important food crop worldwide, after rice and wheat, and a staple in over 130 countries. With origins in the Andean region, the potato is a key contributor to global nutrition and food security.

Potatoes are:

  • 99.9% fat-free
  • 80% water and 20% solids
  • Nutrient-dense
  • A climate-friendly crop with low greenhouse gas emissions

The celebration pays tribute to both the humble potato and the dedication of farmers worldwide.
