IRDAI launches Bima Sugam

Bima Sugam, envisioned as the world’s largest online marketplace for insurance products and services, has officially been launched. The announcement was made by the Bima Sugam India Federation (BSIF) at the headquarters of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) in Hyderabad.

A Global First in Insurance Digitisation
Initiated by Irdai, Bima Sugam is being hailed as a pathbreaking initiative for the global insurance industry. While many countries use digital channels for insurance, the creation of a single unified marketplace of this magnitude is unprecedented.

One-Stop Platform for All Insurance Needs
The platform allows access to life, health, and general insurance, including motor, travel, property, and agricultural policies — all in one place. Users can buy, sell, service, renew, manage, and claim policies seamlessly, with policy documents securely stored online.

Functioning Like UPI for Insurance
Bima Sugam is being compared to UPI and NPCI in digital payments, offering a common infrastructure that connects insurers, intermediaries, and customers. It ensures ease, transparency, and efficiency across the sector.

Low Charges, Wide Participation
The platform charges minimal fees. All insurance companies are members of the system, with most also holding equity stakes in the BSIF, the body operating Bima Sugam.

Significance
By unifying the fragmented insurance ecosystem, Bima Sugam is expected to expand coverage, enhance customer experience, and strengthen India’s position as a leader in digital financial infrastructure.
