January 2026 Wolf Supermoon Lights Up the Night Sky

The January 2026 Wolf Supermoon reached its peak brightness on the evening of January 2, offering skywatchers a slightly larger and brighter-than-usual full Moon.

Why It Is Called the Wolf Moon
The Wolf Moon is the traditional name for the first full Moon of January. Such seasonal names, popularised through almanacs and folklore, were historically used to mark the passage of time before modern calendars. The name is associated with winter legends of wolves being heard more frequently during cold months, rather than any unique lunar activity.

What Makes It a Supermoon
A supermoon is an astronomical term linked to the Moon’s orbit around the Earth. Since the Moon travels in an oval-shaped orbit, its distance from Earth varies:

  • Perigee: Closest point to Earth
  • Apogee: Farthest point from Earth

When a full Moon coincides with perigee, it is termed a supermoon.

Brighter and Bigger Than Usual
During a supermoon, the Moon can appear:

  • Up to 15% brighter
  • Around 30% larger
than a regular full Moon. During the Wolf Supermoon, this effect made the Moon appear slightly larger and brighter than average.

Another Lunar Highlight Ahead: Blue Moon
The year will also witness an extra full Moon on May 31, known as a Blue Moon—the term used for the second full Moon in a single calendar month.
