Jarosite in Gujarat Found to be 55 Million Years Old

A team of researchers has confirmed that jarosite, a mineral first discovered in Matanomadh, Gujarat, in 2016, is around 55 million years old, dating back to the Paleocene period in the geological timeline.

Mars Connection

The finding suggests that geological processes in Kutch were similar to those on Mars millions of years ago. Scientists believe that the environmental and chemical conditions in Matanomadh mirror those thought to exist on the red planet, making it a promising analogue site for Martian research.

Potential for Mars Simulation

The site could serve as a test bed for Mars exploration technologies, including rover mobility, instrument trials, drilling, and geochemical studies. Its relative remoteness makes Matanomadh more suitable for such experiments compared to other jarosite-bearing sites like Kerala’s Varkala cliffs.

Formation and Significance

On Earth, jarosite forms when minerals rich in oxygen, iron, sulphur, and potassium interact in the presence of water. The mineral’s discovery on Mars earlier provided strong evidence of past water activity on the planet.
