J&K Police Unveils ‘Snow Leopard’ Squad

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has unveiled a newly formed elite squad named ‘Snow Leopard’, a specialised high-altitude unit designed to tackle extreme terrain and mountain security challenges in the Union Territory.

  • The unit is tailored to conduct anti-terror operations in snow-bound and mountainous regions, significantly strengthening security capabilities in difficult environments.

Operational Debut at Khelo India Winter Games

  • The squad made its operational debut at the ongoing Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, where it was deployed at altitudes of nearly 14,000 feet to ensure security during the sporting event.

Composition and Specialised Training

  • The unit comprises over 100 personnel.
  • Members are primarily drawn from the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the J&K Police.
  • Trained to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20°C.
  • Equipped to function in low-oxygen conditions, dense forests, and avalanche-prone areas.

Multi-Role Capabilities

Beyond counter-terror operations, the Snow Leopard squad is also prepared for:

  • Avalanche and landslide response
  • High-altitude disaster rescue missions
  • Rapid deployment in remote mountainous zones
