Jyoti–Bishnu International Art Centre Inaugurated in Assam

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah inaugurated the Jyoti–Bishnu International Art Centre in Guwahati, Assam, marking a major cultural milestone for the state.

About the Art Centre

  • Built at a cost of approximately ₹291 crore
  • Seating capacity of 5,000 people
  • One of the largest cultural auditoriums in the Northeast
  • Dedicated to promoting art, literature, music, theatre and cultural exchange

Tribute to Assamese Cultural Icons

The centre is built in memory of two legendary figures of Assam:

  • Jyoti Prasad Agarwala
    • Pioneer of Assamese cinema
    • Directed Assam’s first film Joymoti
    • Used music, theatre and literature to inspire patriotism and the freedom movement
  • Bishnu Prasad Rabha
    • Renowned artist, poet and freedom fighter
    • Known as Kalaguru (Art Guru)
    • Used art as a tool against colonial rule, poverty, inequality and social injustice
