Kamala Hydroelectric Project

The Public Investment Board (PIB) has approved the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project, a major storage-based hydropower initiative proposed in Arunachal Pradesh, official sources said.

Location and River System

  • The project will be developed on the Kamala River, a major tributary of the Subansiri River
  • It is located across the districts of Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey in Arunachal Pradesh
  • The Subansiri is an important tributary of the Brahmaputra River system

  • Type: Storage-based hydropower project with flood moderation component
  • Installed capacity: 1,720 MW
  • Dam: 216-metre-high concrete gravity dam
  • Powerhouse: Underground powerhouse
  • Completion period: 96 months

Energy and Environmental Significance

  • Expected annual generation of 6,869.92 million units (MU) of green energy
  • Will significantly contribute to India’s energy transition goals
  • Supports India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070

Flood Moderation Benefits

In addition to power generation, the project includes a flood moderation component, aimed at:

  • Reducing flood risks in the Brahmaputra valley
  • Enhancing downstream water management during peak monsoon periods
