Karthigai Deepam

A Division Bench of the Madras High Court, on January 6, settled the long-standing dispute over the lighting of the ceremonial Karthigai Deepam lamp at a stone pillar on Thiruparankundram hill near Madurai. The court held that the ritual may be performed, but without public participation, balancing religious practice with heritage protection.

About Thiruparankundram Hill
Rising about 1,050 feet on the outskirts of Madurai, Thiruparankundram hill is a site of multi-religious and historical significance.

  • At its base is the Arulmigu Subramanian Swamy Cave Temple, a major Hindu shrine with centuries-old worship traditions.
  • The hill also houses Jain rock beds and caves, carved over several centuries, reflecting its ancient Jain heritage.
  • At the summit lies the burial site of the Sufi saint Sikkandar Badhusha, around which a dargah later developed.

Multiple Religious Identities
Due to its layered history, the hill is known by different names:

  • “Samanar Hill” for its Jain associations
  • “Sikkandar Hill” after the Sufi saint
These overlapping identities have often been at the centre of competing claims and sensitivities.

Protected Monument Status
Thiruparankundram hill is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) rules. The court took note of this status while restricting public participation in the ritual to ensure preservation of the site and maintenance of communal harmony.
