Kiru Hydropower Project

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against the former Jammu and Kashmir governor and seven others in connection with alleged corruption in awarding ₹2,200 crore worth of civil works for the Kiru Hydropower Project. The case pertains to irregularities and suspected malpractices in tendering and contract allocation.

About the Kiru Hydropower Project:

  • Location: On the Chenab River in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Estimated Cost: ₹4,287 crore.
  • Geography: Constructed between the Kirthai II (upstream) and Kwar (downstream) hydropower projects.
  • Key Features:
    • Dam height: 123 meters from the riverbed level.
    • Reservoir capacity: 41.5 million cubic meters.
    • Diversion tunnel: A 700-meter-long, horse-shoe-shaped tunnel for managing excess water flow.
    • Power generation:
      • An underground powerhouse on the river’s left bank.
      • Four turbines, each with 156 MW capacity.
      • Total capacity: 624 MW.

Significance:

  • Positioned near the convergence of the Chenab River with the Singad and Bela streams, close to Patharnakki and Kiru villages.
  • The project is part of India’s broader strategy to harness hydropower potential in Jammu & Kashmir, enhance energy security, and support regional development.
