Kolhapur ZP Sets Up ‘Pink Rooms’ in 833 Schools for Girls’ Health Support

In a significant step toward improving menstrual health awareness and student welfare, the Kolhapur Zila Parishad in Kolhapur district has established dedicated ‘pink rooms’ in all 833 ZP schools across the district. The initiative aims to create safe and supportive spaces where girls can discuss menstrual health and address basic physical health needs.

  Project Timeline

  • The initiative was launched on November 5, 2025.
  • All 833 schools were equipped with pink rooms by December 30, 2025, ensuring district-wide coverage within two months.

 Funding Sources

The project was financed through a combination of:

  • Public participation
  • Gram Panchayat contributions
  • Alumni associations
  • Donations from charitable individuals and institutions
  • Funds from the 15th Finance Commission allocations

This collaborative funding model enabled rapid implementation without major financial burden on any single source.

 Why Pink Rooms Were Introduced

According to the Zila Parishad, some parents in School Management Committees complained that girls were being sent home for minor health issues that could be handled at school.

The pink room concept was introduced to:

  • Provide a private, safe space for girls
  • Ensure basic care during menstruation
  • Reduce absenteeism
  • Promote open discussion on health and hygiene

 Kishori Samvad Abhiyan Support

As part of the broader initiative, the Kishori Samvad Abhiyan was implemented in September 2025.
This program focuses on:

  • Providing guidance in schools without female teachers
  • Offering counselling support to adolescent girls
  • Spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene and emotional wellbeing
