Kondagai Lake

A new scientific study has unearthed one of the most detailed climate records from peninsular India beneath Kondagai inland lake, located on the outskirts of Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu.

Significance of the Discovery

  • Interior Tamil Nadu has very few well-dated multiproxy lake records, despite the region’s strong dependence on the Northeast Monsoon.
  • The findings help fill a major gap in understanding long-term climate variability in southern India.

About Kondagai Lake

  • Kondagai Lake is situated near Keeladi, an important archaeological site.
  • Keeladi is known for evidence of a sophisticated urban civilisation from the Sangam period, potentially dating back to the 6th century BCE or earlier, thereby pushing back the timeline of Tamil history by centuries.

Why Researchers Chose This Site

  • The lake lies within an ancient human settlement zone, making it ideal for interdisciplinary research.
  • Scientists identified it as a rare natural archive to study:
    • Past monsoon variability
    • Ecosystem responses to climate change
    • Linkages between climate patterns and human habitation

Key Insights from the Study

  • Lake sediments preserve layered records of climatic and environmental changes over time.
  • These records offer insights into how monsoon fluctuations influenced ecosystems and possibly shaped patterns of settlement, agriculture, and urbanisation in ancient Tamil Nadu.
