Labeo uru and Labeo chekida

Researchers at the Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources, Kochi, of the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources claimed to have discovered two new species of freshwater fish from the Western Ghats — Labeo uru and Labeo chekida.

  • Background:
    • Resolved a century-old taxonomic confusion around Labeo nigrescens, a species first described in 1870.
    • Used morphological analysis combining historical specimens and fresh samples from Kerala and Karnataka rivers.

Details of the New Species:

  • Labeo uru:
    • Named after the traditional ‘uru’ (wooden dhow) because of its sail-like elongated fins.
    • Found in the Chandragiri river.
  • Labeo chekida:
    • Known locally as ‘kaka chekida’ (meaning “crow-like” due to its dark color).
    • Found in the Chalakudy river.

Significance:

  • These species are endemic to their river systems — meaning they are found nowhere else in the world.
  • Highlights the Western Ghats as a major biodiversity hotspot, crucial for conservation efforts.
