Madhya Pradesh to Procure Kodo and Kutki Millets for the First Time

In a major boost to tribal farmers and millet cultivation, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved the procurement of Kodo and Kutki millets for the first time in the state’s history. The initiative will be implemented under the Rani Durgavati Shree-Ann Protsahan Yojana.

About the Scheme

The Rani Durgavati Shree-Ann Protsahan Yojana aims to promote nutri-cereals (millets) and ensure fair prices for small and tribal farmers.

  • Procurement period: October 24, 2025 – January 15, 2026
  • Procurement points: Notified mandis across major millet-producing districts.

Procurement Details

Under the scheme, farmers will receive:

  • ₹3,500 per quintal for Kutki
  • ₹2,500 per quintal for Kodo
  • Plus, an additional ₹1,000 per quintal as a direct incentive through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

This mechanism will ensure that farmers are protected against price fluctuations and receive compensation for any shortfall between the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and market rates.

Coverage Area

The procurement drive will cover key millet-growing districts of Madhya Pradesh, including:
Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Dindori, Chhindwara, Shahdol, Anuppur, Umaria, Rewa, Sidhi, and Singrauli.

Significance

  • The decision reflects the state’s commitment to reviving traditional crops and empowering tribal and smallholder farmers.
  • It aligns with India’s broader push for millet promotion, following the International Year of Millets (2023).
  • By ensuring remunerative prices, the scheme is expected to boost millet cultivation, improve nutrition, and strengthen local rural economies in tribal regions.
