Major Gubernatorial Reshuffle Announced by President of India

The President’s Secretariat has announced a major reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and Union Territories in India.

Key Appointment in Delhi

Former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
He replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, who had been serving in the position since May 26, 2022.

Saxena has now been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, replacing Kavinder Gupta.

Other Key Appointments

  • Kavinder Gupta will take charge as Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
  • R. N. Ravi, currently Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed Governor of West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose.
  • Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of Governor of Tamil Nadu.
  • Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed Governor of Telangana.
  • Jishnu Dev Varma will serve as Governor of Maharashtra.
  • Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland.
  • Syed Ata Hasnain, a retired Lieutenant General of the Indian Army, has been named Governor of Bihar.

Constitutional Provisions

Article 153 says that there shall be a Governor for each state.

Article 155 says that the Governor of a State shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal.
