Mati Carbon wins $50million XPRIZE

Mati Carbon, an Indian-led climate initiative has secured the $50 million grand prize in the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition.

  • Mati Carbon uses an Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) model, which captures carbon dioxide (CO2) while boosting crop yields for smallholder farmers. This offers a rare synergy of environmental and social impact.

Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) model

  • Pulverized basalt (a volcanic rock) is spread on farmland.
  • This accelerates natural weathering, captures CO₂, and stores it safely in groundwater and oceans for over 10,000 years.
  • Bonus: Releases essential nutrients to the soil ➔ healthier crops and higher yields!

Current Operations:

  • Working in India, Tanzania, and Zambia.
  • Partnered with 16,000+ farmers since 2022; targeting 30,000 farmers by end-2025.
  • Vision: Impact 100 million farmers by 2045!

Monitoring and Credibility:

  • Strong Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) framework developed with:
    • IIT Kanpur
    • Yale University
    • University of Sheffield
  • Trusted by major carbon credit buyers like Shopify, Stripe, and H&M.
